PYTHON COBRA

Absolutely stunning and somewhat over-engineered

Unique Autocraft Cars were built in very small numbers in Harlow in Essex between 1981 and 1993, in total only around 99 were made. The only model made was a replica of the AC Cobra, the chassis was made of steel with a 92 inch wheelbase onto which an open two seater body was mounted, the model was known as The Python. The suspension came from Jaguar and they were built with a variety of V6 or V8 engines depending on customer preference.

The purpose of this site is to act as an archive regarding anything to do with Unique Autocraft Python Cobras. Information is already scarce, the hope is that by having a central resource, the owners of the remaining cars from the build run of 99, will be able to support each other and share both experience and information that they have.

▶ 03. BSG 676S Cobra
My father built BSG676S in the early 90's

There is also another black (but with red interior) Python that was local to us in Beckenham, also with an auto box, basically an identical spec. Unique introduced him to my father as he was just was starting out and the other one had just been finished and he was looking for advice- they are now both 80 odd and still friends to this day. The car with the red interior was sold to a chap in Blackheath in the early 90's - never seen or heard of it since.

He's still got all the build photos of BSG.

I think he started in 89 and it was on the road in 92/93 with a gel coat, then it was painted in 94 and sold in around 96 from memory.

Attached is a photo next to my Mum's Daimler that they were part way through restoring.

It was built in the single garage behind it, believe it or not!

Happy to share anything further - good to see someone's trying to find them all. I spent many many hours at Unique as a kid (I was about 12 when he started building it) - I 've been in Q606 MEV more times than I care to remember. You need to find the one with an 8.2 litre Donovan engine that went to the States - I remember seeing it in build!

Vehicle Story
Unique Autocraft had their warehouse next to the DAX factory in Harlow, Essex in the 1980s
where they made only one model, the Python. The Python was built in small numbers between
1981 and 1993, it is believed that only around 99 were made, based on the AC Cobra, the steel
chassis was stretched over a 92” wheelbase onto which the two-seater, open top body was fitted.
Jaguars provided the suspension whilst either a V6 or V8 engine of different origin could be
fitted depending on customer preference.

Unique Autocraft unfortunately went out of business in 1995 but they were revised and remade
into ‘R.V.Dynamics’. They continued with the Python, using a ladder frame and multi-tubular
chassis to take BMW 5 series components, manufacturing was moved to Sri-Lanka for cost purposes.

This car was one of the later models made and was destined for export hence it being left hand drive.
It’s now back on home shores and ready for its new owner.

AC Cobra Recreation by Unique Autocraft. An "Historic" Vehicle
Chassis no. 210489047C
Registration no. EHJ 293H
Exterior: Dark Blue
Interior: Black
Mileage: 4950 on odometer
Engine size: 350 cubic inch Chevrolet V8

EHJ 293H is an historic car, based on jaguar parts from 1972
Unique Autocraft Cars were built in very small numbers in Harlow in Essex between 1981 and 1993, in total only around 99 were made. The only model made was a replica of the AC Cobra, the chassis was made of steel with a 92 inch wheelbase onto which an open two seater body was mounted, the model was known as The Python. The suspension came from Jaguar and they were built with a variety of V6 or V8 engines depending on customer preference.

This particular car was built and purchased from Unique Autocraft in 1989, first registered as UDG 682H, the donor car being a Jaguar XJ. It was fitted with a 350 cubic inch Chevrolet small block engine mated to a 4 speed manual gearbox, with Jaguar XJ front and rear suspension and drivetrain.

On 21.Feb.2000 the car was reregistered with DVLA as EHJ 293H.

From the box file of existing paperwork on the car there appear to be only 3 keepers in total

This example has been fitted with a brand new Chevy 350ci V8 engine supplied by British American Engines & has covered only 8000 miles since. Muncie 4 speed manual gearbox. Jaguar independent suspension, oil cooler, Smiths instruments, period switches. Moto-lita wood rim steering wheel, single hoop roll bar with third leg,15" Halibrand alloys with BF Goodrich tyres 235/60 Fr 295/50 Rr. Cobra over mats, polished fire extinguisher, stone guards, stainless bumpers, sun visors and wind deflectors, heater, harness seat belts, two previous owners the last one for 18 years.

Since 2018 when the most recent owner purchased the car, there has been no expense spared and a host of work has been carried out to make this car significantly improved. The upgrades include a gearbox rebuild, new clutch assembly fitted, new Edelbrock carburettor fitted and tuned, Avo fully adjustable shock absorbers custom made and fitted, and 2 new rear tyres.

The Bodywork is in great condition, having been recently resprayed by Carrozzeria, and then totally retrimmed inside, with new carpets and all leather work; so the car is absolutely stunning. There is a tonneau cover with Cobra branding on.

A question that's often asked by Cobra replica enthusiasts is which company produced the first '427' replica in the UK...well, it's not that easy to answer that one. Definitely Paul Banham was sticking Cobra bodies on Triumph TR4s in the late seventies, bodies he bought, I think from Gerry Hawkridge...who probably was the first to create a Cobra replica shape...

Commercially though, it was a very close run thing between Dave Perry (he imported Steve Arntz bodies from America), Metaline, Beribo Replica Automobiles (using Gerry's bodies!), Unique Autocraft and DJ Sportscars, the latter two coincidentally located very close to each other in Harlow, Essex, although quite un-related.

DJ, who at the time, produced nail-on spoilers and body panels in glassfibre had been supplying a German customer with basic Cobra bodies. One day he didn't turn up to collect a consignment so their then sales manager, Adrian Cocking (the man who coined the 'DAX' name by the way, after a character in a Harold Robbins novel he was reading!), persuaded DJ boss, Brian Johns, to produce a 'proper' kit....a small ad in Exchange & Mart to get rid of the German bodies, and suggesting that they were doing their own kit, resulted in so many post cards in response that the sacks filled a couple of Royal Mail vans.

Fact.......the rest as they say, is history. Here's early eighties shots of DAX Cobra and Unique Autocraft Python, the latter pictured at Castle Combe in, I think, 1985 and featuring rear suspension that is properly loaded up judging by the stance of the car. If that's the corner I think it is, the line the driver took could have ended in tears...

This very well travelled example was built by its owner Nigel Brackenbury in 1991 using a rebuilt Chevrolet 5.7 liter engine with a Turbo 350 Automatic Transmission with a Quick Shift kit installed.

Over the years the car been progressively upgraded with the installation of a new GM ZZ4 5.7 liter high performance crate engine in 1998, followed with a conversion to a Tremec TR3450 5 speed manual transmission in 2001. Halibrand Replica 16“ wheels from Image Wheels have replaced the 15“ versions of the same rims that had been installed when new, to enable a wider choice of more modern tyres. Brakes have also been upgraded with the installation of cross-drilled ventilated discs at the front, and a ventilated disc conversion kit (typically used in racing E-Types) installed at the rear to address the tendency of the standard non-ventilated inboard discs to overheat when used severely at track days. The original Triumph brake servo has also been replaced with a Ford Escort Mk5 item. Polyflex suspension bushes have also been installed throughout. Finally the chassis has been modified and strengthened with the addition of struts running forward from the top of the cage to which the rear axle mounts, and attaching alongside the gearbox. This same modification also included a sturdy hoop that runs over the top of the propshaft as additional security in case one of the universal joints should ever fail, and the addition of a large access hatch to the rear bulkhead to make brake and suspension servicing easier.

The car was trimmed in black leather, Wilton carpet and a Mohair hood and tonneau by Neils Auto Interiors in Essex and it still looks good today over 30 years and 80,000 kms later.

It has been registered in the UK (twice), Germany (four times) and Japan (once) as Nigel moved around with his work. Additionally since 2009 he‘s been a regular participant in the Europan Cobra Meetings, and consequently they’ve also visited France, Belgium, Luxembourg, the Netherlands, Switzerland, The Czech Republic, Poland, Slovenia, Italy and Spain.

With very best regards,

Nigel Brackenbury

▶ 17. AVK 137H Cobra
Bought as a kit from UA in 1989 - and after many distractions finished by me and registered for the road in late 1999. Fitted with very powerful small block Chevrolet, 5 speed Tremec box, LSD, ventilated rear discs with dual circuit and adjustable balance bar and via 3 iterations now has much revised and ‘more sporting’ spring rates. The end result is a really competent, responsive and exhilarating car to drive.

The R.V. Dynamics Cars

R.V. Dynamics sits in an interesting, slightly messy corner of the UK Cobra-replica world. The clean version is: Unique Autocraft made the original Python Cobra; later, R.V. Dynamics revived/reworked the Python name into a BMW-based Cobra replica, with some manufacture associated with Sri Lanka. The less clean version is that enthusiasts argued at the time about how much continuity there really was between the original Unique Autocraft Python and the later R.V. Dynamics Python.

The Unique Autocraft Python

Unique Autocraft was based in Harlow, Essex, near the DAX factory, and made essentially one model: the Python, an AC Cobra-style replica. Contemporary resale descriptions say the Python was built in small numbers from 1981 to 1993, with around 99 cars believed to have been made. The original Python used a steel chassis, a 92-inch wheelbase, a two-seat open body, Jaguar suspension, and engine choices including Ford V6s and various V8s depending on the build.

That makes the original Unique Autocraft Python a fairly rare UK Cobra replica, but not one of the completely obscure one-offs. It belongs in the same kit-car ecosystem as DAX, Pilgrim, AK, Southern Roadcraft, etc., but with much smaller production numbers.

What R.V. Dynamics did

After Unique Autocraft stopped trading, the Python name/design story appears to have been picked up by R.V. Dynamics. Several sources describe Unique Autocraft as having gone out of business and then being “revised and remade” into R.V. Dynamics, which continued with the Python using a ladder frame / multi-tubular chassis designed to accept BMW 5 Series components. Some manufacture was reportedly moved to Sri Lanka for cost reasons.

The later R.V. Dynamics Python was therefore not simply the same old Jaguar-based Unique Autocraft car restarted unchanged. The key difference is the donor/mechanical package: the later car was commonly described as being built around BMW 5 Series running gear, rather than the Jaguar suspension layout of the earlier Unique Autocraft Python.

The continuity question

This is where it gets interesting. Some sales descriptions say “Unique Autocraft became R.V. Dynamics,” but forum discussion from the period shows there was disagreement about that wording. Critics argued that R.V. Dynamics “had nothing to do with the original Python” and that the new Python had little technical relationship with the earlier car beyond being a Cobra replica and using the Python name.

A more balanced way to put it is:

R.V. Dynamics seems to have been a successor/revival in branding and concept, not a straight continuation of the original Unique Autocraft engineering package.

That distinction matters if you are assessing provenance, value, parts compatibility, or collectability. A Unique Autocraft Python and an R.V. Dynamics Python should not be treated as identical cars.

People and location

R.V. Dynamics is associated with Vince Wright. Companies House records for a later RV DYNAMICS LTD show Vincent Paul Wright as director, incorporated in 2015 and dissolved in 2018, though that specific company was listed as dormant, so it should not be assumed to represent the original 1990s/2000s kit-car operation directly.

A 2003 PistonHeads thread includes a post attributed to Vince Wright giving an address in Ratmalana Industrial City, Colombo, Sri Lanka, and describing R.V. Dynamics UK at that time as himself operating as a sole trader. This fits the broader story that production or fabrication activity had a Sri Lankan link.

Production numbers

The numbers vary depending on whether people are talking about Unique Autocraft, R.V. Dynamics, or both together.

For the Unique Autocraft Python, around 99 cars is the commonly repeated figure.

For the later R.V. Dynamics Python, one Car & Classic advert claims an estimated 50 cars in total, with around 25 in the UK and the others in the USA and Sri Lanka.

A secondary historical summary gives R.V. Dynamics as active from around 1995 to 2008, with the Python being its most successful model and about 27 Python examples built between 2001 and 2008. I’d treat that as useful but not definitive, because kit-car production numbers are often reconstructed from owners’ knowledge rather than factory records.

Other R.V. Dynamics cars

R.V. Dynamics was not only about the Python. It is also associated with the Nemesis, a Ferrari Testarossa-inspired kit/special, and the SV 2000 / Bugrat, an off-road/buggy-style vehicle. The Python, though, appears to have been the most relevant model to Cobra enthusiasts.

How to think about the cars today

For an owner or buyer, I’d split them into two families:

Car Core identity Typical mechanical basis Likely market perception Unique Autocraft Python Original 1980s/early-1990s UK Cobra replica Jaguar suspension, various V6/V8 engines Older, rarer, more “period kit-car” provenance R.V. Dynamics Python Later revived/reworked Python BMW 5 Series components, revised chassis Rarer, more unusual, but provenance needs careful checking

The Unique Autocraft car likely has the stronger old-school UK Cobra-replica provenance. The R.V. Dynamics car may be more unusual and possibly more sophisticated in some areas, but the market may be more cautious because of the muddier company history, smaller support network, and debate about how directly it relates to the original Python.

What I’d check on a specific car

For any Python Cobra, I’d want to see:

  1. 1. V5 make/model wording — whether it says Unique Autocraft, RV Dynamics, Python, AC, etc.
  2. 2. IVA/SVA evidence — especially important for later builds.
  3. 3. Chassis number / plate — Unique Autocraft versus RV Dynamics identifiers.
  4. 4. Donor basis — Jaguar-based original Python or BMW-based R.V. Dynamics Python.
  5. 5. Build photos and invoices — very important because many kit cars are as good or bad as the individual builder.
  6. 6. Suspension/brake parts list — useful for future maintenance.
  7. 7. Insurance valuation history — niche replicas can vary wildly in value.
  8. 8. Owner-club knowledge — UK Cobra Club or Python owners will likely know individual cars.

My overall take: R.V. Dynamics was effectively a later, small-volume continuation/reinterpretation of the Python Cobra idea, linked to Unique Autocraft by name, moulds/design heritage, and market positioning, but not a simple continuation of the original Jaguar-based Unique Autocraft Python.

FAQ

What do you know?.

1. How many Unique Autocraft Python cars were produced?

Only around 99 are believed to have been built between 1981 and 1993 in Harlow, Essex.

Why it matters: Knowing that makes each car rare — helpful for value, collectibility, and community-building.

2. What chassis and suspension did the Python use?

It used a steel ladder-frame chassis with a 92-inch wheelbase, and suspension components (front and rear) sourced from Jaguar.

Why it matters: These specs distinguish it from many other Cobra replicas and help guide maintenance or restoration.

3. Which engines and gearboxes were fitted to a Python?

Owners had flexibility — V6 or V8 engines depending on preference. Gearboxes varied too (manual/automatic) depending on build and donor components.

Why it matters: Helps determine originality, drives restoration decisions, and sets expectations for performance.

4. Is there a parts archive or documentation for the Python?

Yes — this site hosts a comprehensive “Documents” section with PDFs of instructions, wiring, manual, spec sheets originally collated from various sources.

Why it matters: Critical for owners trying to restore or maintain the car without manufacturer support.

5. What should I check when buying a Python replica?

Good questions include:

  • • Is the chassis original and undamaged?
  • • Are donor-component suspensions/brakes correct (Jaguar) as per original build?
  • • Is build paperwork complete (original invoices, manuals)?
  • • Is the car correctly registered (DVLA history) and tax/exempt where applicable?

Why it matters: These checks reduce risk and help affirm authenticity of a rare build.

6. How does the Python compare to other Cobra replicas (e.g., AK, DAX, Gardner Douglas)?

The Python is often judged to have more “grown-up” engineering: stronger chassis, better-thought-out assembly, and higher specification in many cases. Rarity is also a key factor.

Why it matters: Helps position the car to collectors, justify value, or make purchasing decisions.

7. Are there known quirks or common issues with the Python?

Yes — some known areas:

  • • Donor-part compatibility (when non-original parts fitted)
  • • Age-related wear on fibreglass bodypanels or chassis under-bracing
  • • Documentation gaps due to small production run.
    Hopefully solved here.

Forums note that some owners regard them as “undervalued” given rarity.

Why it matters: Knowing these helps plan inspections, budget for maintenance, and avoid surprises.

8. Can I still get support or community help for a Python today?

Absolutely — this site is designed as a central archive and community hub for remaining cars. Owners are encouraged to share experience and documentation. Check out the UK Cobra Replica Club too.

Why it matters: Community support becomes invaluable when factory support no longer exists.

9. What registration or legal considerations apply for one of these cars?

As small-series cars with donor parts, you’ll want to check: correct registration date, historic vehicle exemptions (if eligible), compliance with IVA/SVA (for certain years), and pedigree paperwork. Example: one car was SVA/IVA registered as of 1999 despite being built in 1990.

Why it matters: Legal/registration status can affect tax, legality to drive, insurance, and resale value.

10. Where can I view the list of known cars and their histories?

On this site’s “The 99 Cars” section you’ll find a compiled list of known registrations, build notes and images for many of the surviving Pythons.

Why it matters: Good for provenance, community tracking, identifying unknown cars, and building the archive.

11. Can I visit Unique Autocraft or see a car in person?

The original Harlow factory no longer operates, but several Pythons are regularly displayed at UK classic car events, Goodwood track days, and Cobra Club meets. Also, it's worth giving Total Headturners a call as they often have Python Cobra's in stock.

Why it matters: You'll see the build quality when compared to many modern replicas. Whilst the Unique Autocraft Python's are somewhat over-engineered, this can only be seen as a good trait.

12. Why is the Python considered an underrated Cobra replica?

Its build quality and chassis engineering often surpass better-known replicas, yet it remains a hidden gem due to low production numbers and limited marketing at the time — making it one of the UK’s best-kept motoring secrets.

Why this matters: This question directly addresses perception versus reality — something that deeply affects both heritage preservation and market value of the Unique Autocraft Python.

Did you know: Many enthusiasts know DAX, Pilgrim, or Gardner Douglas Cobras, but far fewer know the Python. By calling out that it’s “underrated,” you plant curiosity, prompting visitors to ask why and discover the engineering and quality differences that made the Python special.

Python owners often have to explain their cars’ lineage compared to more famous replicas. Questions often allow owners to reinforces that this is not “just another kit,” but a rare, well-engineered British-built sports car with authentic Jaguar underpinnings.

The strength of collectibility and historical value. Collectors love rarity and underdog stories. Emphasising that the Python is exceptional helps frame it as a hidden classic, which in turn boosts its perceived value and encourages people to preserve documentation, share history, and maintain authenticity.

UniqueAutocraft.co.uk is an archival project and owner hub, not just an information page. It's about passion — we're not just answering technical queries; we’re reminding visitors why this car deserves attention and respect.

The site encourages community engagement and invites discussion. Owners and enthusiasts will share experiences, restoration notes, and period photos to prove their car’s worth. That kind of organic contribution strengthens the archive and keeps information flowing back into the site.

This future-proofs the Python’s legacy. As classic-car values shift, documentation and narrative become as important as mechanical condition. Framing the Python is a gem and we'll protect its legacy for future generations, ensuring it’s recognised alongside better-known Cobras rather than forgotten.
